What is a materials compound microscope?
Materials microscopes are used to view materials subjects such as metals, composites and plastics at high magnifications, typically ranging from X40 to X1000. They all have reflected (top) light which sends light through the objective onto the specimen. The specimens need to be flat and reflective in order to see the image reflected back into the optics. Some microscopes also have transmitted light so that transparent subjects can be viewed.
How do you calculate the magnification?
The total magnification is calculated by multiplying the power of the eyepieces (typically 10x) by the power of the objective (typically 4X, 10X 20X, 40X or 100X).
If you have a camera attached the magnification is calculated differently and is dependent on chip size and the type of adapter used. For example 0.5 inch chip camera with a 0.5X c-mount adapter will give approximately the same magnification as a 10X eyepiece.
Attaching Cameras to a Microscope
If you choose a microscope with a trinocular head you can attach a camera to the phototube and leave the eyepieces free for viewing.
If you choose a binocular or monocular microscope you can still attach a camera but it must occupy the place of an eyepiece.
For trinocular headed microscopes you can either buy a c-mount camera adapter which goes direct onto the phototube or you can convert the phototube into an eyepiece tube with a 23.2 mm adapter.
Then any of the GXCAM microscopy c-mount cameras can be used which come with an eyepiece adapter kit.
If you wish to use other types of digital cameras you will need to make them terminate in a T-mount and then you can use a digital camera adapter.
